Curiosity in Action: Highlights from the 3rd Annual EIS Student Research Conference

Last Saturday, curiosity took center stage at the 3rd Annual EIS International Student Research Conference—a day filled with thought-provoking ideas, inspiring discussions, and bold exploration.

One of the most memorable moments came from Xavier Landes, Associate Professor at the Stockholm School of Economics in Riga, who reminded us that the French word sens means both meaning and direction. This insight perfectly captured the conference theme—curiosity—and how it drives us to seek knowledge, uncover meaning, and chart new paths in both research and life.

The conference wasn’t just about academic brilliance; it was about human connection. Our speakers captivated us not only with their expertise but with their willingness to share personal stories—moments that sparked their curiosity and inspired them to dive deep into diverse topics. From the ethics of AI and knowledge evaluation to the dangers of microorganisms in plastic bottles and transparent voting models, the range of ideas explored was truly breathtaking.

A highlight of the day was the dynamic panel discussion on preventing formal education from stifling curiosity. Guest speakers, alumni, teachers, and students came together to share their perspectives, celebrating how the IB program nurtures curiosity, interdisciplinary thinking, and critical inquiry.

None of this would have been possible without the dedication of the event organizers: DP Coordinator Mrs. Fleur Serrière, Humanities Teacher Mr. Germans Aminovs, Head of Science Department Mrs. Linda Edine, Head of Math Department Mrs. Zane Latve, and Middle and High School Principal Mrs. Alina Jeremenko.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to making this event a resounding success. It’s moments like these that remind us of the power of curiosity to transform ideas into action and bring people together. Here's to continuing to explore, question, and innovate!
