Latvian Studies Olympiad
latvian studies olympiad at exupery international school
On March 28, we hosted the second round of the Open Olympiad in Latvian and Regional Studies, as well as the award ceremony for the first round.

The participation of 120 students and 65 teachers was very inspiring as the community of Latvian public and international schools from around the world came together to celebrate language and culture.

The results of the second round will be announced at the Latvian festival on June 3. We look forward to seeing all the participants there!

Teachers' Conference
On April 1 we organized a professional development conference entitled "From chit-chat to academic fluency: Language perspectives in the classroom". The focus was on teaching approaches in a multilingual environment.

During the conference, one particular topic raised a lot of interest and lively discussion - Cummins Theory. It explores the relationship between a person's first language and their ability to learn a second language. So, valuing and maintaining a student's first language while teaching them a second one enhances their language development and academic achievement. It was especially inspiring to see teachers from different schools and universities come together to learn from each other.

The conference provided a space for the participants to network, share their experiences, and discuss different teaching approaches. We are also grateful to our partners, Roong Aroon International School and Stockholm School of Economics in Riga, for their collaboration.
Charity Clothing Drive

Our Grade 11 students have created a project called "Happy Hour" to volunteer and support local communities. Since October last year, they've organized workshops in nursing homes in Riga, and now they continue to help orphanages in collaboration with "Hope for Children". The students' current project focuses on clothing.

They have set up a donation box at EIS where everyone is welcome to donate clothes they feel need a second life. The "Happy Hour" team then sorts through the clothes and distributes them to those in need. A simple yet impactful way to make a difference in the community.
Success in the Chemistry and Physics Olympiads
Congratulations to our Grade 12 student who was selected as one of the top participants in the Baltic Chemistry Olympiad (BChO) qualifier. After the first round, held at the Academic Centre for Natural Sciences of the University of Latvia, Vlad got a place in the team of 8 students for the upcoming competition in April 19-21.
We also congratulate our student Olita from Grade 12, who secured the third place at the Latvian Open Physics Olympiad, as well as an honorable mention and an award for the most original solution in the theoretical part of the Physics State Olympiad. We also thank our science teachers for their invaluable guidance and support.

Semifinals of the "FIZMIX Eksperiments" Competition
We are thrilled to announce that our 9th-grade students have made it to the semifinals of the "FIZMIX Eksperiments" competition! Over the past few months, they have been putting their knowledge to the test in this student competition together with participants from 145 schools across Latvia.

Organized for the 28th time by Latvenergo, the "FIZMIX Eksperiments" competition aims to promote interest in the exact sciences, educate students about the safe and efficient use of electricity in everyday life, show how theoretical knowledge can be applied in practice, and inspire future careers in engineering and technical professions. Throughout the competition, our students have deepened their knowledge of physics and explored the practical application of theories. They have tackled various tasks prepared by experts and physics enthusiasts. After months of active participation and learning, the young participants have to solve practical, complex and tricky problems on various physics topics at the finals of the competition.

We couldn't be prouder of our students and wish them the best of luck! Read more about Saturday's event here and about the contest in general here.
Join the Volleyball Season!
latvian studies olympiad at exupery international school
The volleyball season has recently begun at EIS. Practiсes are held as usual on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in the school gym during the ASA time.

Maksim Kiryanov, Grade 10 student and leader of the volleyball group, shared his thoughts and feelings about the current state of affairs, "I started playing volleyball not so long ago and I admire this sport. On Mondays and Wednesdays we are usually five to six people and on Fridays we have ten people, which is not enough for a proper training. So it would be great if more students joined us to have tournaments and compete with other international schools."
"Food for thought"
AI and language bots like ChatGPT continue being the buzzword in the world of education, but also beyond.
So the first question is: how good is it? Education Next put ChatGPT to the test by evaluating essays that ChatGPT was asked to write based on real-world curriculum prompts. The results show that ChatGPT produces responses that meet or exceed standards at all grade levels. This article discusses the implications for schools and what they should do to keep up with the ever-changing technology.
If ChatGPT can write virtually anything it is asked to write, the second question arises: do students even need to learn to write if AI can do it for them so easily? In this article, you'll learn more about the possible impacts of AI tools on educators and students. Another concern is that ChatBGT will cause humans to lose their jobs in the midst of governments touting productivity and efficiency gains. You can read more on this in this recent BBC article.
Finally, on a positive note, according to this Education Week article, teachers have used or considered using the chatbot for lesson planning, rubric creation, and student feedback on assignments, among other tasks. While some educators are concerned about the impact of automating these parts of teaching, others say that the tool can save them hours of work and free up time for interacting with students or their personal lives.
